What is Self-Archiving? Self-archiving is a strategy used by authors to make their scholarly works available on the open web--to provide open access.
In this context, the contents are usually journal articles, conference or technical reports, theses and dissertations, or data sets. A scholarly work is self-archived if it is posted to a personal or professional web site, deposited in an institutional repository, or contributed by the author to a disciplinary archive such as the Social Science Research Network SSRNarXiv, or PubMed Central.
Depending on the terms in the publishing contract, these forms of self-archiving may or may not be permitted; authors are often not aware that they may have signed an agreement prohibiting these forms of distribution. Some authors agreements permit certain forms of self-archiving, but not others: for example, they may permit a pre-peer reviewed copy to be made available, but prohibit distribution of the final, publishers PDF.
Sometimes they impose an embargo period, that is: the work can be archived by the author in an open access system see discussion of three such modes belowbut only after a period of time has elapsed. The most common embargo periods are 6 months and 12 months, but there is some variation by publisher. Personal Websites. Many authors, including many faculty at Northwestern, have professional web pages that describe their research interests and recent publications.
Authors often wish to make electronic copies of these publications available for direct download. Personal or professional web pages serve many valuable purposes: they provide information about faculty expertise to the university, the higher education community, and members of the press.
They help potential collaborators to find each other. They share the results of important research with members of the general public. Subject Repositories.
Some authors deposit working or final versions of their papers in disciplinary or subject repositories, where it may be more readily found by researchers with similar interests.
A more complete list of disciplinary repositories is maintained at the Open Access Directory wiki. Institutional Repositories. Many institutions of higher education maintain repositories to house the output of their own faculty and researchers. These institutions are making a commitment to providing stable, long-term access to these important works, and attempt to create a comprehensive picture of the research output of their scholars.
Northwestern does not yet have an institutional repository, although work and discussions about establishing one are underway. Northwestern University Libraries www. Liz Hamilton Copyright Librarian Contact.Asking university letters for english proficiency letter pdf

When you publish an article in a traditional subscription journal, in most cases you sign an agreement with the publisher. Therefore, if you plan to self-archive a copy of the article, you should check the publisher's terms and conditions for self-archiving.
The publisher's terms and conditions may state restrictions for when a copy of the article can be published and what version the copy should be. Some publishers only allow self-archiving after an embargo, that is, with a delay since the article was first published in the journal.
The publishers conditions regarding version usually mean that the copy you self-archive must be a so called post-print, a peer reviewed manuscript without any connection to the journal's layout. To find out what applies to self-archiving specifically for your article, you can look up your journal in the database Sherpa Romeo. The database holds information about terms and conditions from many journals and publishers.
If the journal is not listed in Sherpa Romeo you can find information about copyright and terms and conditions for self-archiving on the journal's website.

Find Journal. Open Access. We have recently updated our posting policy and introduced a new hosting policy. We announced this change on our community and information site, Elsevier Connectand have provided some FAQs below based on feedback from our customers, researchers and the wider academic community.

We have formally supported the STM Article Sharing Principlesalongside other publishers, and are keen to provide additional clarity for researchers, libraries and also to otherhosting platforms about how to share and aggregate research published by Elsevier.
We recognize that authors want to share and promote their work and increasingly need to comply with their funding body and institution's open access policies. We wanted to update our policies to provide clearer and more consistent guidelines that support these needs and are aligned with the rest ofthe publishing industry. We are broadening the ways researchers can share their research; we continue to support sharing of preprints, accepted manuscripts, and final publications and provide simple guidelines for authors about how they can share at each stage of their workflow.
More specifically:. See our handout "what has changed" PDF. Green open access is the result of making a version of a subscription article available to everyone.
The sharing policy gives authors guidelines about how they can do this and also how to share their articles in other ways. For example, they may want to share their latest paper with colleagues, students, or other members of an online working group. Every author who publishes with us, retains important rights including the right to use their paper for personal use, or for internal use at their institution. The sharing policy is aligned with these author rights and provides additional ways authors can share their research, for example on their institutional repositoryfor public access after embargo.
We are already listed as a "green" publisher and we don't expect this to change with the new updated policy announcement. You can find the embargo period information for all Elsevier journals on the journal homepage or alternatively download a complete list here: www. The embargo period begins from the date the article is formally published online in its final and fully citable form i. Elsevier has a number of funding body agreements in place to help authors publishing in Elsevier journals to comply with their funder or institutional open access policies.2009 chevy traverse catalytic converter problems
